Google Analytics

Its function is to measure user interactions on websites. Google Analytics is a simple and easy to use tool that helps website owners to measure how users interact with the content of the site. When a user navigates through the pages of a website, Google Analytics provides the owner of said site with JavaScript tags (libraries) to record information about the page a user has viewed; for example, the URL of the page. Google Analytics JavaScript libraries usecookies HTTP to "remember" what a user has done in previous pages or interactions with the website.

Google Analytics supports two JavaScript libraries (tags) to measure the use of websites: analytics.js and ga.js.

The following sections describe how each of these libraries uses cookies.

analytics.js: use of cookies

The JavaScript library analytics.js part of Universal Analytics and use own cookies to:

  • Distinguish unique users
  • Limit the percentage of requests

When using the recommended JavaScript fragment, analytics.js set the cookies in the highest level domain that you can. For example, if the address of your website is blog.example.co.uk, analytics.js will set the domain of the cookie as .example.co.uk. Setting cookies in the highest possible level domain allows you to track users in various subdomains without adding additional configuration.

Note: analytics.js does not require that cookies be configured to transmit data to Google Analytics.

analytics.js configure the following cookies:

Cookie Duration Description
_ga (Google) 2 years It is used to distinguish users.
_gid (Google) 24 hours It is used to distinguish users.
_gat (Google) 1 minute It is used to limit the percentage of requests.
_gali (Google) 30 segundos Atribución de enlace mejorada
AMP_TOKEN 30 seconds to 1 year Includes a token that can be used to retrieve a customer ID from the AMP customer ID service. Other possible values indicate disqualifications, requests in progress or errors obtained when retrieving an ID of the AMP customer ID service.
_gac_ 90 days Includes information about the campaign related to the user. If you've linked your Google Analytics and AdWords accounts, the website conversion tags will read this cookie, unless you disable it. More information

ga.js: use of cookies

La JavaScript library ga.js use own cookies to:

  • Determine the domain to be measured
  • Distinguish unique users
  • Limit the percentage of requests
  • Remember the number and duration of previous visits
  • Remember the information of traffic sources
  • Determine the start and end of a session
  • Remember the value of custom visitor variables

By default, this library configures cookies in the domain specified in the browser's document.host property and configures the cookie path at the root level.

This library configures the following cookies:

Cookie Duración Descripción

__utmt 10 minutes It is used to limit the percentage of requests.
__utmb 30 minutes from the configuration or update It is used to determine new sessions or visits. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library is run and there is no __utmb cookie. The cookie is updated each time data is sent to Google Analytics.
__utmc End of browser session It is not used in ga.js. It is configured to interact with urchin.js. Previously, this cookie acted together with the cookie __utmb to determine if the user was in a new session or visit.
__utmz Six months from the configuration or update Store the traffic source or campaign that explains how the user has reached the site. The cookie is created when the JavaScript library is run and is updated every time data is sent to Google Analytics.
